We all want to believe that we are capable of great feats, of reaching our fullest potential. We need dreams. They give us a vision of a better future. They nourish our spirit。
They represent possibility even then we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers Dreamers are not content with being merely mediocre, because no one ever dreams of going halfway.
When we were little kids, we didn’t dream of a life of struggle and frustration. We dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. We dreamed big.
We know now that we have to put in the effort to reach our dreams, but the tough part is that most of us don’t know where to start working. duanwenw.com We might have every intention of becoming Vice President in five years or running across the finish line in a marathon or completing the novel we started years ago. But often we have no idea how to translate these dreams into actions.

In order to make real steps toward fulfilling our ultimate, big, splashy dreams, we have to start with concrete objective. These are our goals.

BOOKS 书籍
As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.

Manager: I’ve just looked over your resume and I must admit I am quite impressed.
Sales Rep: Thank you. I’ve worked pretty hard to be able to list those accomplishments.
Manager: You’ve got plenty of training and experience. I wonder if you could tell me something about your goals. Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Rep: To be honest, I don’t plan in that much detail. My goals tend to be general; I define success according to the job at hand. I see myself advancing as I succeed, but I don’t necessarily dwell on the timing of each step.
Manager: interesting! And how do you feel about decision-making? Are you an independent thinker, or do you depend more on your superior for direction?
Rep: That depends a bit on the problem at hand. There are certain situations in which a manager can give a general directive, and expect his employees to know how to take the initiative on the details. I am known for taking the initiative, but I believe I also have the discernment to wait for direction when the situation calls for that.
Manager: Sounds good. Everyone is taking about teams these days. Can you describe your role as a member of a sales team?
Rep: I see myself as an encourager. Of course, sales can be quite competitive and sometimes people in this field have a secret desire for others to fail. In my last job, each representative handled a different region. I developed a system for sharing sales gimmicks that worked. Soon the whole sales team started saving up stories, not just to brag, but to share.
Manager: So, your experience is as impressive in practice as it is on paper.

home
家
What makes a home? Love and sympathy and confidence. It is a place where kindly affections exist among all the members of the family. The parents take good care of their children, and the children are interested in the activities of their parents. Thus all of them are bound together by affection, and they find their home to be the cheeriest place in the world.
A home without love is no more a home than a body without a soul is a man. Every civilized person is a social being. No one should live alone. A man may lead a successful and prosperous life, but prosperity alone can by no means insure happiness. Many great personages in the world history had deep affections for their homes.
Your home may be poor and humble, but duty lies there. You should try to make it cheerful and comfortable. The greater the difficulties, the richer will be your reward.
A home is more than a family dwelling. It is a school in which people are trained for citizenship. A man will not render good services to his country if he can do nothing good for his home; for in proportion as he loves his home, will he love his country. The home is the birthplace of true patriotism. It is the secret of social welfare and national greatness. It is the basis and origin of civilization.

Older people must be given more chances to learn if they are to contribute to society rather than be a financial burden, according to a new study on population published recently.
The current approach which focuses on younger people and on kills for employment is not adequate to meet the challenges of demographic change, it says. Only 1% of the education budget is currently spent on the oldest third of the population.
The challenges include the fact that most people can expect to spend a third of their lives in retirement, that there are now more people over 59 than under 16 and that 11.3 million people are over state pension age.
"Learning needs to continue throughout life. Our historic concentration of policy attention and resources on young people cannot meet the new needs," says the report’s author, Professor Stephen Mcnair.
The major portion of our education budget is spent on people below the age of 25. When people are changing their jobs, homes, partners and lifestyles more than ever, they nees opportunities to learn at every age. For example, some people are starting new careers in their 50s and later.
People need opportunities to make a "midlife review" to adjust to the later stages of employed life, and to plan for transition to retirement, which may now happen unpredictably at any point from 50 to over 90, says McNair.
And there should be more money available to support people in establishing a sense of identity and finding constructive roles for the "third age", the 20 or more years they will spend in healthy retired life.

I believe that we are not real social workers.
We may be doing social work in the eyes of the people, but we are really contemplatives in theheart of the world.
For we are touching the body of Christ twenty-four hours...
And I think that in our family we don’t need bombs and guns, to destroy, to bring peace;justget together, love one another, bring that peace, that joy, that strength of presence of eachother in the home.
And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.
And with this prize that I have received as a Prize of Peace, I am going to try to make the homefor many people who have no home.
Because I believe that love begins at home, and if we can create a home for the poor I thinkthat more and more love will spread.
And we will be able through this understanding love to bring peace, be the good news to thepoor, the poor in our own family first, in our country and in the world.
To be able to do this, our Sisters, our lives have to be woven with prayer.
They have to be woven with Christ to be able to understand, to be able to share.
Because to be woven with Christ is to be able to understand, to be able to share.
Because today there is so much suffering...
When I pick up a person from the street, hungry, I give him a plate of rice, a piece of bread, Ihave satisfied.
I have removed that hunger.
But a person who is shut out, who feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person who has beenthrown out from society - that poverty is so full of hurt and so unbearable...
And so let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love, andonce we begin to love each other naturally we want to do something.
To avoid the various foolish opinions to which mankind is prone, no superhuman genius isrequired.
A few simple rules will keep you, not from all error, but from silly error.
If the matter is one that can be settled by observation, make the observation yourself.
Aristotle could have avoided the mistake of thinking that women have fewer teeth than men, by the simple device of asking Mrs. Aristotle to keep her mouth open while he counted.
He did not do so because he thought he knew.
Thinking that you know when in fact you don’t is a fatal mistake, to which we are all prone.
Many matters, however, are less easily brought to the test of experience.
If, like most of mankind, you have convictions on many such matters, there are ways in whichyou can make yourself aware of your own bias.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciouslyaware of having no good reason for thinking as you do.
If someone maintains that two and two are five, you feel pity rather than anger.
The most savage controversies are those about matters as to which there is no good evidenceeither way.
Persecution is used in theology, not in arithmetic, because in arithmetic there is knowledge, but in theology there is only opinion.
So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidencewarrants.
A good way of riding yourself of certain kinds of dogmatism is to become aware of opinionsheld in social circles different from your own.
Seek out people with whom you disagree, and read a newspaper belonging to a party that isnot yours.
If the people and the newspaper seem mad and wicked, remind yourself that you seem so tothem.
In this opinion both parties may be right, but they cannot both be wrong.
This reflection should generate caution.
Many articles have appeared in recent years, claiming that there are no more heroes in theWestern world.
The authors say that, particularly in Europe and North America, the young now refuse toadmire anyone;that we aare living in a world too well informed, too curious and critical for hero worship.
The press, books, and television keep showing us the faults of the public figures who couldbecome today’s stars, until we lose faith and start looking for defects in any person who seemsworthy of respect.
In a neighbor or a statesman, we try to discover the weaknesses, failures, or ugly motives thatare surely hiding behind his noblest actions.
Is it true that we know too much?
Were our ancestors lucky to be only partly informed?
Those who read the first biographies of Charlemagne, George Washington, Joan of Arc, or othergreat men and women of the past were not told that their hero had bad breath or disliked hismother; they only found a desc ription of his great accomplishments and their admiration wasstrengthened.
In fact, early biographers didn’t hesitate to make up an admirable story or two about theirhero.
The man who wrote the first biography of Washington, for instance, invented the cherry tree; he admitted later that there was no truth in it, but he said that it was in character and that itwould give young men a good example to follow.
His readers didn’t seem to object; the book was reprinted eighty times — a tremendous successin those days.
Modern biographers do not invent such stories, they respect the facts, as indeed they should.
But we pay a price for their truthfulness, for in their efforts to show “the whole person,” theytell us more than we really need to know about private lives, family secrets, and humanweaknesses.
The true greatness of a fine man is often forgotten in the display; and people lose not onlytheir admiration for him, but their willingness to trust any other “star” completely.

Time is tangible. One can gain time, spend time, waste time, save time, or even kill time. Common questions in American English reveal this concrete quality as though time were a possession. “Do you have any time?”, “Can you get some time for this?”, “How much free time do you have?” The treatment of time as a possession influences the way that time is carefully divided.
Generally, Americans are taught to do one thing at a time and may be uncomfortable when an activity is interrupted. In businesses, the careful scheduling of time and the separation of activities are common practices. Appointment calendars are printed with 15-,30-, and 60-minute time slots. The idea that “there is a time and place for everything” extends to American social life. Visitors who drop by without prior notice may interrupt their host’s personal time. Thus, calling friends on the telephone before visiting them is generally preferred to visitors’ dropping by.
Useful words and expressions:
3. reveal
4. scheduling

Soccer has had a slow start in America. In fact, themajority of schools still have no official soccer teamsor coaches. But the blossoming popularity of thegame cannot be denied. Thanks to the efforts ofsome world-famous soccer stars, soccer is soon tohave its place in American culture.
Although soccer has enjoyed decades of popularity elsewhere, it was literally ignored in America.Instead, a variation of the game called “football”was most popular in the U.S. and still is to this day.But the obvious advantages of playing soccer instead will soon win even the most avid football enthusiasts.
For one thing, soccer is a much safer game to play than football. No one deliberately tries toknock an opponent down in soccer. In fact, they players are discouraged from even touching each other.
Soccer is a game that requires skill and dexterity in controlling the ball. Since no one may usehands to do this, soccer players soon acquire incredible control of their heads, knees, andfeet.

Why is it so difficult to fall asleep when you are overtired? There is no one answer that applies to every individual. It is possible to feel “tired” physically and still be unable to fall asleep, because while your body may be exhausted, you do not feel sleepy. It is not so easy to simply “turn off”.
Lack of sleep complicates matters even more. Experts say adults need at least seven to eight hours of sleep a night to function properly. When you get less sleep than that on consecutive three nights, you begin to accrue four “sleep debt”. As sleep debt increases your body experiences a stress response. Now a vicious cycle has been created: You experience the feeling of being more and more tired, but your body is increasingly stimulated. “Power sleeping” for more hours on weekends is only a temporary solution. There is no substitute for getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis.
Useful Words and Expressions:
1. overtire
2. apply to 将……应用于
3. consecutive
4. accrue
5. vicious

Nothing succeeds like confidence. When you are truly confident, it radiates1 from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet.
It’s very important to believe in yourself. Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them.
Confidence is more than an attitude. It comes from knowing exactly where you are going and exactly how you are going to get there. It comes from acting with integrity3 and confidence. It comes from a strong sense of purpose. It comes from a strong commitment to take responsibility, rather than just letting life happen.
One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and to get a record of successful experiences behind you.
Confidence is compassionate4 and understanding. It is not arrogant. Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, while confidence comes from strength and integrity.
Confidence is not just believing you can do it. Confidence is knowing you can do it. Know that you are capable of accomplishing anything you want, and live your life with confidence.
Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort and self-confidence. People give all kinds of reasons for why they started smoking, but none of them are good — not even supposedly altruistic ones.
While some claim that you’re actually saving our overburdened healthcare system money in the long run by smoking because it reduces life expectancy, it’s nowhere near a watertight argument.
First of all, you’re certainly not doing your family and friends a favor by deliberately lowering your life expectancy. In fact, your family will have to absorb the losses incurred when you miss work due to smoking-related illnesses. Second, there is a lot of debate over the best way to measure the economic costs of smoking.
Every study is based on different assumptions, and uses different data and methods. For example, should you measure the cost of smoking by looking at the cost of treating major illnesses like lung cancer and heart disease, or should you also measure the cost of less serious illnesses? Should you take into account the fact that people who live longer also pay more taxes and insurance premiums? Should you look at the overall cost to the healthcare system, or at the cost per individual?
Anyway, regardless of how you calculate them, the economic costs of smoking are inconsequential when compared to smoking’s real price: the misery caused by the deaths of over 400,000 people each year and the illnesses of several million.

The hummingbird was lost in the supermarket, exhausted, starving, and near death as it spiraled towards the ground on helpless wings.
I snatched her away from the crushing carts, cupped her in my hands, and rushed for the exit.

Slowly, she perked up and her claws tightened on my finger. Then she spread her wings and flew on her own: a tiny, sweet miracle.

I find listening most difficult, because I worry about the words I don’t know. Now I’m trying to focus on the general idea, not worrying about the new words. This makes me feel good, because I know I’ve understood something. Then, I listen again carefully and if I have any problems I play the difficult parts again. In this way I come to understand better both the main idea and the details of the listening text.

More and more of the world’s population are living in towns or cities. The speed at which cities are growing in the less developed countries is alarming. Between 1920 and 1960, big cities in developed countries increased two and a half times in size, but in other parts of the world the growth was eight times their size. The sheer size of growth is bad enough, but there are now also very disturbing signs of trouble in the comparison of percentages of people living in towns and percentages of people working in industry. During the 19th century, cities grew as a result of the growth of industry. In Europe, the proportion of people living in cities was always smaller than that of the workforce working in factories. Now, however, the reverse is almost always true in the newly industrialized world; The percentage of people living in cities is much higher than the percentage woking in industry. Without a base of people working in industry, these cities cannot pay for their growth. There is not enough money to build adequate houses for the people that live there, let alone the new arrivals. There has been little opportunity to build water supplies or other facilities. So the figures for the growth of towns and cities represent proportional growth of unemployment and underemployment, a growth in the number of hopeless and despairing parents ans starving children. 完全地 eg: His music is sheer delight. 烦扰的,担心的,令人不安的 eg: There was something about him she found disturbing. 比较 eg: It is demonstrably an unfair comparison. 短语: comparison with 与...... 比较 in comparison with 与..... 比例,均衡,部分 eg: The punishment was out of all proportion to the crime. 短语: in proportion 成比例;相称 a large proportion of 一大部分 out of proportion 不成比例 in proportion as 按...... 劳动力,工人总数,职工总数 eg: Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. 相反,背面 eg: The wrong attitude will have exactly the reverse effect. 充足的,足够的 eg: One in four people worldwide are without adequate homes. 设备,设施 eg: What recreational facilities are now available? 成比例的,相称的 eg: Loss of weight is directly proportional to the rate at which the disease is progressing. So the figures for the growth of towns and cities represent proportional growth of unemployment and underemployment, a growth in the number of hopeless and despairing parents ans starving children. Global warming may or not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but—regardless of weather it is or isn’t— we won’t do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed. Al Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth,” as if merely recognizing it could put in on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don’t know enough to believe global warming, and — with our major technological breakthroughs — we can’t do much about it. No government will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel)that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show they’re “doing something”. Consider the Kyoto Protocol. It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn’t. But it hasn’t reduced CO? emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories didn’t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008 — 2012 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it. The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it’s really engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don’t solve the engineering problem, we’re helpless. 严肃的,庄重的 eg:His solemn little face broke into smiles. ,托付 eg: They made a commitment to peace. 引人注目的,戏剧性的 eg: Their arrival was dramatic and exciting. 遵守,观察 eg: Everyone should observe the law. 突破 eg: Scientists have made a breakthrough in their treatment of that disease. 进取的,攻击性强的 eg: The dogs are trained to be aggressive. 短语: aggressive mode 积极模式;主动模式;挑战模式;激进模式 aggressive active 积极主动 aggressive Driving 侵略性驾驶;攻击性驾驶 7. fossil fuel 矿物燃料 eg: Coal is usually referred to as a fossil fuel. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. More mature members of staff may be weaker and less agile than their junior counterparts, but they more than compensate with their greater experience, ability to work in teams, and success at coping when things go wrong. The researchers say: While older workers make more errors, perhaps due to declining physical attributes, they hardly make any severe errors, perhaps due to more experience. It is experience that prevents severe errors. The scientists who studied production lines at a Mercedes-Benz truck factory in southern Germany also found that younger, more highly educated workers were less productive than those who had fewer qualifications — perhaps because the educated workers got bored more easily. The researchers, from the University of Mannheim, said their findings debunked the idea that older workers should be made redundant to boost productivity. 有成效的 eg: Science and technology are part of the productive forces. 敏捷的,灵活的 eg: An acrobat has to be agile. 应付,对抗,妥善处理 eg: He had a lot of work, but he was able to cope. 揭穿真相,暴露 eg: Don’t let me debunk you. 短语: debunk it 揭穿它 debunk myths 破除误区 the truth by debunk 真相被揭穿 5. redundant adj. 多余的,累赘的,解雇的 eg: There are too many redundant words in this book. More mature members of staff may be weaker and less agile than their junior counterparts, but they more than compensate with their greater experience, ability to work in teams, and success at coping when things go wrong. Students’ pressure sometimes comes from their parents. Most parents are well meaning, but some of them aren’t very helpful with the problems their sons and daughters have in adjusting to college, and a few of them seem to go out of their way to add to their children’s difficulties. For one thing, parents are often not aware of the kinds of problems their children face. They don’t realize that the competition is keener, that the required standards of work are higher, and that their children may not be prepared for the change. Accustomed to seeing A’s and B’s on high school report cards, they may be upset when their children’s first semester college grades are below that level. At theire kindest, they may gently inquire/ enquire why John or Mary isn’t doing better, whether he or she is trying as hard as he or she should, and so on. At their worst, they may threaten to take their children out of college, or cut off funds. Sometimes parents regard their children as extensions of themselves and think it only right and natural that they determine what their children do with their children, they forget that everyone is different and that each person must develop in his or her own way. They forget that their children, who are now young adults, must be the ones responsible for what they do and what they are. 压力 eg: He will never pressure you to get married. 短语: under pressure 在压力之下;受到压力 high pressure 高压,高气压;高度紧张 blood pressuren 血压 low pressure 低气压;松懈 under the pressure of 在......压力下 2. aware adj. 知道的,意识到的 eg: Smokers are well aware of the dangers to their own health. 短语: aware of 意识到,知道 become aware of 知道;发觉 3. competition n. 竞争,比赛 eg: The farmers have been seeking higher prices as better protection from foreign competition. 短语: in competition with 与......竞争 domestic competitionn 国内竞争 capacity of competition 竞争能力 4. keen adj. 锋利的,敏锐的,强烈的,精明的 eg:He had retained a keen interest in the progress of the work. 温和的,温柔的 eg: He patted me gently on the back. 威胁,恐吓 eg: He tied her up and threatened her with a six-inch knife. 短语: threaten to do sth 威胁要做某事 threaten the existence of 威胁到......的存在 threaten proceedings 以起诉恐吓 threaten sb with sth. 伸展,延长,扩充,电话分机 eg: She can get me on extension 308. 短语: extension of time 延期;延长合约期 file extension 文件扩展名 extension telephonen 电话分机 8. involvement n. 包含,缠绕,混乱 eg: The results of these struggles underline the importance of both individualism and government involvement. 短语: involvement in 介入 personal involvement 个人参与 nvolvement load 投入量 9. identification n. 身份的证明,视为同一,确认 eg: He did not have any identification when he arrived at the hospital. Sometimes parents regard their children as extensions of themselves and think it only right and natural that they determine what their children do with their lives.

There are four basic types of college degrees in America, starting with the associate degree. The associate takes about two years to plete when one is enrolled full-time. The bachelor’sdegree takes four years of full-time study with the master’s taking one to two years, and thedoctor’s three to four years. The associate degree may be substituted for the first two yearsof a bachelor’s degree if it is a transfer degree. Not all associate degrees are designed for atransfer. Some are technical degrees called terminal degrees, which means they do not counttoward a bachelor’s. The bachelor’s is normally required before one can work at the master’slevel. Good afternoon, and wele to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw yur attention to a few of our laws.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 13 years of age, not may your friends buy it for you.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noises, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.
Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use the crossing for walking and do not take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about litter. It is against the law to throw away waste materials in a public place. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, as regards by saying, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 11 years of age.
I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should get in touch with local police station, who will be pleased to help you. Now are there any questions?

Courage
勇气
The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less amagnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must in spite ofpersonal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures and thatis the basis of all human morality.
To be courageous…requires no exceptional qualifications, no magic formula, no special combination of time, place andcircumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all.Politics merely furnishes one arena which imposes special tests of courage. In whatever arena of life, one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may bethe sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience, the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men, each man must decidefor himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can definethat ingredient, they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provideinspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this each man must lookinto his own soul.

The Gift Of Love
If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrong doing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I thought like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

A Glass of Milk
One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words……
“Paid in full with a glass of milk.”
(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly
Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently: “Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands.”

The Choice of Companion
A good companion is better than a fortune, for a fortune cannot purchase those elements of character which make companionship a blessing. The best companion is one who is wiser and better than ourselves, for we are inspired by his wisdom and virtue to nobler deeds.
“Keep good company and you shall be one of the number.” said George Herbert. “A man is known by the companion he keeps.” Character makes character in the associations of life faster than anything else. Purity begets purity, like begets like; and this fact makes the choice of companion in early life more important even than that of teachers and guardians.
It is true that we cannot always choose all of our companions, some are thrust upon us by business or the social relations of life, we do not choose them, we do not enjoy them; and yet, we have to associate with them more or less. The experience is not altogether without compensation, if there be principle enough in us to bear the strain. Still, in the main, choice of companions can be made, and must be made. It is not best or necessary for a young person to associate with “Tom, Dick, and Harry” without forethought or purpose. Some fixed rules about the company he or she keeps must be observed. The subject should be uttermost in the thoughts, and canvassed often.
Companionship is education, good or not; it develops manhood or womanhood, high or low; it lifts soul upward or drags it downward; it ministers to virtue or vice. Sow virtue, and the harvest will be virtue, Sow vice, and the harvest will be vice. Good companionships help us to sow virtue; evil companionships help us to sow vice.

home
