  Personal Statement

China is a country that pays so much attention and emphasis on education. Elementary School for a starter, following the Junior Middle School, Senior Middle School, College, Graduate School and etc., every student must receive a series of strict and systematic academic training before he really can be put to good use in society. Children’s education plays a very important role in family life too. Parents put so much expectation on their children, and give all they can to shape their children prodigies. Expectation is a two-edged sword: on the one hand, it brings students a strong backup and good surrounding for study that their parents never had; but on the other hand, expectation also means much pressure and rigor. Meanwhile, the pressure does not only come from the family. The competition within schools is so intense that every entering a higher school is like a war – fighting for the opportunities to enter best schools. In the last eleven years, I have been growing under such a background.

When I was at the age about to enter elementary school, like all the parents under the sun, my mom and dad believed that I deserved the very best from the beginning. So they worked so hard on getting me into the best elementary school of the city. But unfortunately, due to the entering-the-nearest-school rule for primary school prospective students, I finally got into the one that was two blocks away from our house – a mediocre elementary school. To mom and dad, it was all along a big pity that I couldn’t have the best education. But deep in my mind I decided to make up their regret with my own working. So, early since I firstly entered school, I have taken education more seriously than most of my peers. I studied so hard, looking forward to increasing my knowledge, expanding my view of the world and getting more and more mature. Six years quickly disappeared into history. I soon found myself standing in front of another turning point. I made my determination to open myself the best middle school’s gate.

However, sometimes determination doesn’t always turn out the best result. My knocking didn’t get the most desired answer I was expecting. Again, I missed the chance to enter the best school in our city. However, instead of getting disappointed this time, mom and dad even felt delighted because though it was not the best, the Junior Middle School that admitted me was also a considerably renowned one. Yet I still haven’t got very satisfied about the result. During the three years in Junior Middle School, I never slowed down my steps to pursue my aim.

My determination pushed me to seek the best in everything I do, whether in academic studies or other aspects of life. I remember the time I got myself into a dilemma. Because of my outstanding trumpet skill, I took the position of chief trumpet player in school orchestra. So I had to keep a well-balanced connection between study and music. But at the end of one semester when I was tensely preparing for the finals, I suddenly received the notification from the orchestra for a big performance, which means I had to spend much time on rehearsal and practicing for my own solo. The two things seemed so conflictive that both mom and dad advised me to give up the performance. But I wanted the performance to be good as much as my academic record. I accepted to make the performance without hesitation. For a whole month, I almost wanted to divide every minute into two. I clutched every second in the daytime to work on my school courses because the trumpet score was waiting for me in the night. In order not to annoy neighbors, I closed myself into the small toilet of our house. It was in summer, the small closed space was so hot and fuggy. My body got totally wet with sweats every time I finished the practicing. After one month, I did very well in both the examination and performance, with the cost of a couple of kilograms’ weight drop. With a determination like that, after the completion of Junior Middle School, I finally got admitted by one of the top middle schools of our city.

I aspire to study Biochemistry in my undergraduate years and become a scientist specialized in biochemical sciences. Honestly, my first encounter with this subject was not a very pleasant memory. When I was very young, I watched a movie “The 731 Army” which tells of the biochemical weapon research of Japanese Army in China during World War Two. In the movie, Japanese Army uses innocent villagers to test the biochemical weapon, the horrible vision deeply carved in my memory. Since then on, both that movie and biochemistry were an unspeakable taboo to me. But things got totally changed when I began to take chemistry study in middle school. I was suddenly captured by the great fascination of chemistry. Chemical experiment became my most favorite class. And only school studies could not satisfy my curiosity, I expanded my readings to many other sources. From the learning, my early fear of biochemistry was gone completely, because the more I read, the more I found it such a beautiful and useful subject for our human being. I know becoming a scientist in biochemical field will be a long and tiring process. But my determination gives me the confidence and courage to face any challenge and difficulty.

(Responses to essay questions... . Please limit your response to on page.),则依其要求回答不超过一页,以免出现文章过于冗长而影响录取委员会审核。

“I am interested in English literature.”这句话表达不够清楚,而“I was concentrated on Milton and Shakespeare in college.”

“I received extensive training in physics.”这句话不够详细,“My training was in the area of particle physics.”

“I was very active as a student representative.”

“I am attracted to your department by its brilliant faculty”——

“Your esteemed school”——应代以学校的名字;“I will return to serve my country.”——应明确说出所要从事的到底是什么工作。

Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects, my friend Seung-woo told me with a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field for women. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs, he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of people in my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women are inherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with this outdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematical achievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypes through my example.

Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even in elementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent in mathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like other students collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledge in high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, including the Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along with my top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered my confidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable of performing at the highest levels.   Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has been difficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. More significantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math and science have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I want to study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream without these constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at a university in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of American academic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students devotion to their studies and the systems ability to support each students goals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which, in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned for its emphasis on cultivating students full development, or curapersonalis. At Boston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellent mathematician.

I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome many challenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as a Korean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years from now. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo. We will have corresponded over the years, so hell already know about the many mathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of the international acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admits that I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I will be proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increased opportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bit wider.

  Academic and research background

The desire to know more about the nature has motivated me to step into the broad world of science. I have cultivated my great interest in physics, chemistry, biology and a lot of related fields since I was very young. I was armed with strong foundation in physics due to my three years’ time in Tianjin Nankai High School, (one of the most famous high schools in China).

In the September of 2000, I entered University of Science and Technology of China and became a member of physics department since then. New environment always brings unexpected difficulties, and great effort has given by me to get adapt to the new life. During the period of hard trying, both my knowledge and my maturity have remarkably grown and I finally got rank above 12 % of 140, with overall GPA 3.5/4.0, and major GPA 3.8/4.0. My hard working finally earned me the Outstanding Student Scholarship in 2003.

Besides enhancement of knowledge in physics, I have also accumulated a great deal of knowledge in chemistry and material science. I have got 95/100 in “The Structure and Properties in Solid and Solid State Chemistry” and 87/100 in “Solid State Optics and Spectroscopy”, among the top scores in class. Moreover, I have made effort to improve my ability in mathematics and computer science cautiously.(附加的段)

My two years’ research in Structure Research Laboratory of USTC has brought me to a more extensive and practical field of physics. Served as an undergraduate research assistant in Professor Xianhui Chen’s group, I have devoted most of my time to the research and my knowledge in condensed matter physics and its related fields have greatly increased. I have obtained all the basic experimental skills in a very short time and in order to keep with the pace of the latest achievement in my research field, I have spent a large amount of time in reading related journals, such as Appl. Phys. Lett., J. Appl. Phys., Phys. Rev. B, Phys. Rev. Lett., J. Solid State Chem. and so on.

At the beginning of 2003, I began my systematical work in exploring the growing method and transport property investigations in hole-doped single crystal BSLCO (Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO4+y) series and electron-doped NCCO (Nd2-xCexCuO4-y) series. My work was focused on the single crystal preparation and physical property measurement, especially the transport property and magnetic properties. After so many times of attempt in the melting range and descending speed, I successfully grew a great deal of single crystals with high quality. Moreover, I have spent so many days and nights together with my colleagues in lab measuring the resistance of the single crystals under zero field and high field. Due to the high quality of the crystals and our hard work, we finally obtained plenty of meaningful data and by analyzing the normal state property, I have submitted a paper titled “Field-induced log (1/T) diverging resistivity deviation from normal state in superconducting cuprates” to Phys. Rev. Lett. in 2003 as the third author. However, my work was not stopped and with further investigation in the 2D weak localization system, I have submitted another paper to Europhys. Lett. in October 2003 as a co-author.

Besides, through the work, I obtained almost all the skills of manipulation of the corresponding instruments from physical preparation to characterization, such as M.Braum Glove-Box system (Germany), MORRIS High Pressure system (Berkeley), Rietveld and Lebail Refinement of crystal structure from XRD pattern, 17 T Ultra-High Magnetic Field system (Oxford Science), AC Assistance Bridge (Liner Research Inc.) sputtering and so on. What’s more, I can skillfully use software, (GSAS, FullProf, CELL PCPDFWIN and etc), to analyze the structure of the material through X-ray diffraction data.

Beyond the achievement in research, the happiness I gained from the cooperation with others and the approach of the physics science was greater. Times of failure make me believe that the persistence is the only thing to make people gain their goals and the research work needs active and creative thinking. I often have discussion with other members in my group not only on the current encountered problem but also on the some new ideas for research. During the weekly group meeting, we often exchanged our views on our current research project and I have learned a lot through this communication.

Meanwhile, I never give up searching for more extensive and challenging field. Actually, some of my present work is from my own idea. Known the misfit layer of CoO2, I have grown some single crystals of highly efficient thermoelectric materials, such as Bi2Sr2Co2O, Bi2Sr2CoO6+y, Ca3Co4O9....... In order to find the relationship between the misfit structure of CoO2 layer and the high thermoelectricity, magneto-resistance and magneto-power, I have investigated the low-temperature transport, thermal and magnetic properties. By reading a number of related papers, I plan to take further investigation of these materials through their thermoelectric potential and other related measurements.

With great interest in nano science, I have paid extra attention to the update technique in synthesizing the nanowires and nanoparticles. Both from the corresponding books in this field and experience of the PhD students in my group, I grasped a number of methods, such as micro-emulsion, hydrothermal method, sol-gel and other soft chemical ways to synthesize the nano scale materials. Under the available condition, I am synthesizing the nano scale superconducting material YBCO and nanowires of magnetic materials, such as La0.5Ba0.5MnO3.

More and more do I realize the importance of collaboration, during my exploring of the novel polycrystalline Co1212 and Fe1212. The samples were reported by some group to be superconducting only if it is annealed under the extreme pressure. I have measured the transport property of the crystals and observed some abnormal phase transition of superconductivity. However, because of the limitation of experimental condition, our samples cannot become superconducting. In order to solve the problem, we cooperated with Institute of Physics of China Academic Science to obtain the extreme pressure. Two papers of my work on Co1212 have been submitted to the international journals late this year, and I was the second author. In this case, I realized the cooperation within and without a group is equally important, and sometimes accomplishment is gained under several groups of people. We also have done some work in YBCO thin film transport property, collaborated with professor C. L. Chen of Superconducting Center Texas, U.S.A.

In addition, I have also attended some of other sub-group’s research project, such as using sol-gel method to grow Ru1212, NaCoO2 transport property investigation and colossal magneto resistance materials preparation. What’s more, I have also attended the 7th National Superconductivity Conference and National Annual Conference of Physics in 2003. My ken was greatly enlarged by hearing the report of the attendance and my confidence in my research was increased at the same time.

  Research interest and future plan

Material of science and engineering is concerned with the study of structure, properties and applications of materials. During my two years’ research in Structure Research Laboratory, I have accumulated plenty of knowledge in the related area of material science, and meanwhile my ability in doing research is greatly proved. In the past work, I have done quite a lot in synthesis as well as characterization, and I have also deal with different classes of materials, such as electronic, magnetic, superconducting and so on. I believe, aimed with strong foundation of physics, the appropriate area for me to take research work will be more extensive.

The area of interest is just as following:

  1. I have read a lot of corresponding papers in magnetic recording research, and I have great interest in this kind of materials. I believe research in this area is important both for basic studies of the effects of dimensionality and interactions, and for the future of magnetic recording. Hence, I wish to do some work in synthesis and processing of this kind of materials.

  2. Because nano materials, such as carbon nanotubes, nano particles, quantum dots, nano-porous structures, and nano-electronics device materials, are the essential part of the current and future nano-based technologies. I hope very much to continue my future research work in this area.

  3. Moreover, I am also interested in the structural material, such as advanced engineering materials, which characters may be changed responding to the different mechanic condition. So I think I also hope to do the related research in analysis of materials property.

My future plan is to pursue my PhD degree in material science and engineering. In fact, though the technology is developing at a tremendous speed, there is still a lot of progress remaining to be made. For instance, nanoscale devices, either assembled lithographically or chemically, will have a high probability of failure. Therefore, any architecture built from large numbers of nano scale devices will necessarily contain a large number of defects, which fluctuate on time scales comparable to the computation cycle. Furthermore, deeper insight should be given into the constraints imposed by nano-devices, especially carbon nanotube-based devices, by modeling the devices and corresponding architectures. Such a framework can contribute towards building more powerful nano-probes, nano-computer and efficient power fuel-cells.

  Why I Choose UCSD

UCSD is world famous for its outstanding faculty and reputation. Though the economic condition in California is not so satisfying at the moment, I believe it will not impede the future development of UCSD.

The Materials Science and Engineering Program at UCSD aims to provide fundamental knowledge for understanding of materials with the objective of predicting, modifying, and tailoring the properties of materials to yield, at the technology level, enhanced material performance. Also, I was greatly impressed by the great collaboration of different departments, which makes the Materials Science department more competitive and attractive. With so many outstanding professors and so broad research areas, I was convinced that the Material Science and Engineering Department is always the best choice for me to pursue my PhD degree.

Brought up in a shabby and cramped small apartment, I was fascinated in my childhood by the exquisite houses and condominiums I watched on TV in images that had been shot in the developed countries. It has since been my dream to build up in China the same kind of quality human habitat. I believe that this dream can come true if I get to undertake advanced studies in architecture at your university.

I am now erecting fundamental building blocks towards the realization of my dream at the Harbin Institute of Technology (known as HIT), from which I am scheduled to graduate next year. This elite institution accepted me in 1995 in recognition of my strong performance in the National University Entrance Examinations, held once every year nationwide to screen high school graduates for higher education. Here, I have received vigorous training in structure engineering, an area of study that is essential to the country’s frenzied construction industry.

Deeply in love with my chosen area of studies, I have turned my mind into an engine of creativity during three years of disciplined learning. Courses of my major, particularly structure mechanics, architecture material, and survey of engineering, fascinate me so much that I am sometimes completely enthralled in studying them. Looking now at the reinforced concrete structures around me, I not only detect the configuration inside easily but also arrive at some preliminary assessment of its strengths and weaknesses quickly. Everything that comes into my sight presents itself in the framework of some form of structure. Carefully groomed as the only child in my family, I cannot stand being the second best in any group and situation, especially when it comes to a contest of intellectual caliber. At HIT, I beat the odds and excelled all most of my fellow students in academic studies, making myself the undisputed academic leader of the class. Students and faculty alike are so accustomed to my academic excellence that everybody would be surprised in class if I happen not to be able to answer a question better than others even once. My motto is : one either comes out the first, or he is a failure. The university has awarded me a string of scholarships and other accolades in praise of my academic achievements.

But I am no bookworm. In fact, I am constantly engaged in a host of extracurricular activities, for which I have been conferred a Special Commendation for Participation in Social Activities. I have run and won the position of monitor in my class during my first semester, which made me a natural student leader. Active on campus, I was then appointed the recreation officer of the Student Association, in charge of organizing entertainment and other recreational events for the benefit of the students. I now also serve as the president of the Society of Student Architects and Engineers. Such involvement in the student affairs has tempered my skills in leadership, organization and communication. But more importantly, it has broadened my horizon and deepened my insights in terms of what constitutes beauty, grace and strength, which I believe will always help me in my engineering designs.

I would like to mention here my passion for a uniquely oriental sport called weiqi, known as the go in the English parlance. An intricate chess game, it is challenging to even the best and brightest minds. One usually has to be a full-time player to play it well. Not to be daunted, I not only joined the Weiqi Club on campus but also taken part in a national contest, in which I won the 12th place and the HIT team I led won the 3rd place. My achievement in the weiqi sport testifies to my superior mental power and intellectual resourcefulness.

To tap fully into my intellectual resources, I would like to take up the greater challenges of helping to design my country’s skylines in the 21st century. For that, I need better training that what I have received. An American education will expose mw to new perspectives and endow me with new inspirations. When I get to combine my Chinese perspectives with those of the West, I should have no trouble fulfilling my ambition of cutting one of the best structure engineers in the world. With that, I want to design and build the most beautiful structures in China.

To ensure both my future and that of my country’s construction industry, I sincerely hope that I could be admitted into your university. I am confident that, if I can be lucky enough to study under your seasoned guidance and with your kind financial assistance, many people in China will never have to endure the kind of shabby and inconvenient apartments that I endured as a child.

To live a meaningful life everyday; to continually pursue my predetermined worthwhile goals. -My view of life. Could I put myself in the life-threatening working environment? Could I sacrifice my life for the benefits of others? Some people may laugh at my crazy question. To me, that is a serious question I have come a long way to find my answer. “I am not sure whether it is worth to answer”; “What is the true meaning of that question?” When I was a young child, I watched a soap opera that was about court. I was deeply impressed by the judge’s calmness and the lawyer’s eloquence and resource that were showed in this opera. From then on, I hoped to study law some day. Fortunately, I performed well in entrance examination and got enrolled into xx University. Then I chose law as my major without hesitation. At university, I studied hard and got GPA 3.4. What’s more, I broadly read all kinds of books, including philosophy, history etc. My teachers’ instruction strengthened my understanding of law and makes me understand the significance of law to a country. From my studies, I had a lot of fun and got more interested in law. Moreover, I actively participated in practice in holidays from common company to law firm and tried to apply the theory I had learned into practice. This summer, I had my internship in counselor department in xxx Group Co Ltd which was involved in a business contract dispute, which was submitted to China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission for arbitration. As a representative of the requested applicant, I took part in the evidence collection in the early arbitration stage and clearly explained why the 5% balance of goods was not paid on time. After knowing the whole case, I visited my teacher, an Arbitration Law professor, and listened to her opinions. Realizing the counterpart didn’t completely implement their contract duty, I gave reasons as follows: First, the counterpart company didn’t mention bearing issue, which caused that the delivered machines couldn’t be put into the plant because of the disqualification of workshop. Thus overhaul was necessary, which delayed production and resulted loss. Based on these reasons, the counterpart didn’t completely carry out its duty, so our party did not pay the balance on time.During this time, I found out the evidence and pictures that attested counterpart did not give reasonable suggestion and service, and made a statement in the court. Finally, the arbitration turned out that counterpart compensated our loss, in which the arbiters invoked the reasons that I stated. They had a panel made up of 3 lawyers and 5 company representatives as agents while we just had 3 persons—two lawyers and me. Under such condition, I was able to cooperate with them and clearly stated my opinions without any nervousness, which got their respect. This matter greatly inspired my enthusiasm on study. In addition, I took part in the contact draft in several companies. In the process, when I met a lot of problems, I often turned to my teachers for help, which made good impression on them. As I cherished each practice, I studied my specialty and English hard. With effective study method and diligence, I did well both in English and law, which helped me a lot to get scholarship every year. On the other hand, my practice inspired me to study. In practice, I exercised my legal knowledge. I also realize the big gap between theory and its application—sometimes I have master the rules but I didn’t know how to use it in actual case. My practice experiences have not only strengthened what I learned but have supplied new knowledge for me, which is good for my future study and career. In my study and practice, I admired outstanding lawyers’ eloquence and jumping thinking more and more. However, in China, most of lawyers come from theory study and those who can perform well in practice are insufficient. Moreover, after the China’s entrance to WTO, there are a lot of problems with Chinese law. I think, my internship experience is not enough. In practice, I could combine substantive law with procedural law to analyze case, but I still feel my theoretical foundation is not solid enough. What’s more, comparably speaking, the chances that I have to initiatively study and practice are not a lot. Thereby, I am eager to study further abroad to know more about foreign law, thoughts and lawyer career so that I am able to stand out in fierce competition. 谨记:simple is the best。

There was never any doubt that I would pick Environmental Science.

Studying at sixth form has made me realise that my favourite parts of each subject are based on the processes and sustainability of the environment. For my Product Design coursework, I was redesigning manufactured goods to be ‘greener’; making a lamp that was 80% more efficient and could also be broken down to be recycled. I prevailed in the organic module of AS Chemistry in which I learnt about the use of fossil fuels and pollutants. And in Maths, I concluded that the statistics module was the most rewarding because it showed me how the subject is integrated into almost everything; I was using methods from my statistics class to help me with my Geography coursework, in which I surveyed a river environment and how humans influence it – I took pleasure in wading through a river and the great sense of fulfilment to draw a conclusion from information I had gathered and processed myself.

I feel that this course will satisfy my curiosity about the world around us, and hope it will lead me to a career that aims to find ways to use the world’s resources in a sustainable way.

I have not missed an opportunity to get involved with extra-curricular activities; as I was walking through school to head home after some particular activities, I was often greeted by teachers making statements such as, ‘Are you still here?’ but I kept coming back.

Being part of every girl’s team available, and captaining some select games, meant that I set aside a lot of time to the cause; but this was no chore, I love the social side of sports because everyone involved has so much enthusiasm, which they portray in such an energetic manner. I joined clubs out of school, representing the South Bucks hockey team in the Thames Valley games and playing in an under sixteen’s netball club let me meet many new people that I shared a common interest with. I also became part of a non-competitive hockey club for older hockey players, where the training was more vigorous and my team mates were a lot wiser – I often had to decline invitations to the pub, purely because I was too young - but the harder training routines improved my self discipline that lead me to having new skills.

For games such as netball and rounders it is essential to cooperate and follow instructions; you have to play your part in the game, doing this has not only taught me how to be part of a team, but how to lead one too. I am now part of the sports council, representing the sixth-form, we are currently working to encourage younger pupils to attend after school sports clubs and are organising a sports day for year seven. I also represent sixth form in the school council where we discuss how to make school a better environment for everybody; the latest proposal was to introduce paper recycling.

My school holds a summer awards evening every year for the lower school, I acquired awards for my work in various subjects and one for service, these made me feel like quite the specialist and encouraged me to put more effort in and lend a hand to others. I was made a prefect in year eleven and am now a senior student, I was very eager to help in the smooth running of the school to give back a little of what I have been given in extra-curricular time and resources. Last year I helped out in a year nine maths class once a week, I felt a sense of satisfaction when students were able to use concepts that I had explained to them. Also last year, when GCSEs were over, I started to teach myself guitar. Starting off, it took self-motivation to keep on learning as things got harder, and fingerprints started to wear off, but now I am part of a band and I know that it was undoubtedly worth the effort.

I have always loved learning new fields of knowledge and I am looking forward to exploring them in more depth at a higher level. I see university as an opportunity to utilise better facilities and expertise, and I understand that I must contribute all I can and rise to all the challenges put to me.

The tap water I drank for two years in England holds a hint of chlorine,

nevertheless, drinkable; its Swiss counterpart, crystal-clear and tastes divine. I have inhaled voraciously the air in Pullman, Washington, along with its scent of ripening wheat and temperate forests. I have swum into the Mediterranean Sea straight from the Barcelonata beach ten minutes away from downtown Barcelona. All the while travelling and studying aboard, I think about my home, China, about how none of these things can be done there. And the thought pains me.

Becoming an Environmental Engineer is not a mere whim resulted from my concerns for China’s pollution – it became a determination, when I spent a fruitful summer at Washington State University as a research student in Laboratory for Atmospheric Research. Under the guidance of Professor Serena Chung, Professor Brian Lamb and a doctoral student Rodrigo Gonzalez-Abraham, I conducted an analysis on the effect of wildfire

atmospheric emissions on regional air quality, using the current and future year simulations output by the WRF-SMOKE-CMAQ modeling framework. I discovered that wildfires account mainly for the particulate matters in the air, and that the increase in the precipitation in the future is likely to be responsible for a 60%-80% decrease in particulate matter’s concentrations. Not only have I improved my programming skill, data processing skill and the ability to

approach a task through my project, but also gained knowledge in the field of air monitoring and control through a series of “crash courses” equivalent to classes that an Environmental Engineering undergraduate would take. I

become enticed by the complexity and the interdisciplinarity of environmental modeling, and reaffirmed Environmental Engineering as my career path. At the time when several faculty members from the department were leaving for Tianjin, China for a project, and joked about the possibility of their accurate measuringequipments malfunctioning when operating in the megacity plagued by pollution, my heart sank, and instantly I knew that my best career option is to help converting the terrible situation.

As a Physics major and a Math minor, I make more efforts than a summer research to edge my way into Environmental Engineering. For senior year, I am taking a course entitled Water Quality and another one on Environmental Systems at Swarthmore College. In the former, I will work on a group project that aims to improve the pollution model of a local creek, developed by Professor AuthurMcGarity using Storm Water Management Model. If my schedule allows, the summer after my graduation will include taking basic engineering summer courses in preparation for graduate school. In addition, I

will be spending my fall break this year working at California Air Resources Board and learning how research results influence public policy making. In my one-month winter break, I will intern in the Bio-fuel research sector at the ENN Company, a Chinese energy company that plays a leading role in the development of oil extraction from algae cultures.

It took me a while to figure out that I want to use my specialty in the real world as an engineer. This is mainly because I am also fascinated with theories and abstract concepts that Physics and Mathematics offer. Immersed in the

atmosphere of a liberal arts college, I embrace the idea that a kid should study what fascinates him/her the most in college. Armed with enthusiasm, I did a month-long Theoretical Physics research during the summer of freshman year, on the question of whether our universe has a “preferred” handedness and whether it is detectable in the large-angle anisotropy of Cosmic Background Radiation. As it turns out, it takes more than a month for a freshman to tackle Theoretical Physics, for I spent most of the time teaching myself General Relativity through a thick textbook written by John Wheeler, instead of doing anything remotely original. While I enjoy leaving the research with a mindful of abstract ideas about the origin of the universe, I settled with myself on the contention of whether to pursue pure theories throughout my life.

The decision is no. As a result, my second research in Physics, the one started in the fall of 2009 and evolves into my senior project, differs significantly from the first one. The project in the Non-linear Physics Lab at Haverford College looks at the behaviors of swimming microorganisms in a quasi-2D fluid. The project was especially challenging at the beginning, because of the universally known fact that you cannot let a Physicist take care of living organisms. I had to figure out a systematic procedure to culture algae cells, to keep them motile, to add fluorescent tracers without disturbing their normal metabolism, and to take accurate measurements. Looking back at those days, I realized that the most valuable lesson I have learned is neither the lab procedures nor the

modeling skill, but an effective approach to a new project and the step-by-step elimination of experimental difficulties. This was also a time during which I encountered frustrations and joys down the path of an objective research, and tried to handle them professionally. They say doing research is about how you do it, not what you do. And I hope to incorporate my Physics research experiences and perspectives into the future research in Environmental Engineering.

As my transcript indicates, I intend to finish my undergraduate in three years. Although Bryn Mawr and Haverford equip me with a broad spectrum of

knowledge in Math, Physics, Economics and Art History, the absence of an Engineering department results in my eagerness to move on to a

comprehensive university with more Engineering resources and peers, a university like Columbia.

It is impossible not to be impressed by the Carbon Sequestration research going on in Columbia for someone like me who reads every issue of Scientific American. Although I may lack the knowledge in Engineering Design, I am

confident to enter this new field under the guidance of Professor Klaus Lackner; more importantly, I have already developed a strong passion for Carbon Sequestration through reading various literatures. Also, Professor

UpmanuLall’s specialty appeals to me because of his projects related to

hydro-climate modeling and policy-making tools. Having visited SEAS and the department twice, I fell in love with the department’s friendly atmosphere and its “international flavor”. I would like to believe that I will be an asset to the department in return. My education background spans from China, Oxford to Philadelphia; from fifty kids per classroom in middle school, ten teenagers from five different countries per classroom in high school, to twenty brilliant young women and no men per classroom in college (see resume). I find equally great pleasure in two seemingly contrary activities: scientific research and

philanthropy. It is my career goal to become a world citizen who, on one hand, savors the withdrawal of research, and on the other hand, advocates for a better environment when not at the desk. I am to be an Environmental

Engineer, for my own pleasure, for the sake of my homeland, and for the sake of this globe we are all living in. And Columbia holds the same belief.

  Personal Statement

  Intended Program: Industrial Design

I was an industrial designer before I knew that I was. Suppose you were required to remove the scales of a fish or the skin of a potato, what would you do? My solution was simple—find 10 lids of bear bottles and nail them, inside out, in two rows onto a strip of wood. The zigzag structures would make this a handy tool, which was at once cost-efficient and environmentally friendly as it was recycled from waste industrial materials that would otherwise be buried in dump hills. Though this hand-made industrial product I invented when I was an elementary school student was not manufactured on a commercial basis, my parents and all the neighbors liked it for its practicality.

Yet, I was deeply aware of its inherent limitations. It was coarse and rough and did not look beautiful. I told myself that I must create a beautiful design. Then the opportunity came. Representing our school, I participated in a XX and, by exercising my talents in painting, I produced a very “artistic” design which brought me a winning prizing.

In retrospect, it was my family background that triggered my creative design impulses. Both of my parents are architectural designers and in their studios I could meet their colleagues and friends who were architects, structure engineers, interior designers and furniture designers. Under their influence, my early design works already manifested three essential elements of modern industrial design—functional pragmatism, aesthetic appeal, and environmental friendliness.

Now, on the verge of completing my undergraduate program in industrial design at the Department of XXX of XX University, I have gained a heightened understanding of industrial design as a scientific discipline. I have not only laid a solid academic foundation by excelling in all my specialized courses and achieving top scores in almost all of them; I have also improved my practical design skills through producing dozens of refined and sensitive works (please refer to my portfolio). As a junior student, I represented my university to participate in two international design competitions “XX” and “XX” Through effective teamwork, we succeeded in completing our competing pieces “XX” and “XX”

My undergraduate program is a journey of explorations and discoveries. While developing my scholastic aptitudes and practical skills, I have honed my aesthetic sensibility, perception of the world around us, and understanding of human needs. It is a process of unraveling my potentials and giving free play of my creative mind. My designs are characterized by bold originality, tempered by meticulous attention to even the minutest detail. In choosing industrial design, I have given full ventilation to my artistic impulses and concern for practical human demands.

Yet, a humiliating experience wrought an indelible memory on my mind, triggering my determination to pursue an advanced education in industrial design. At the end of the first semester, our department received a delegation of industrial designers from a German university. When touring XX, one of the delegates said to me: “I do not see many good design examples in this oriental metropolis. The gray buildings, with their uniform colors and contours, merge with the gray skyline indistinctively. The street lamps, bicycles, and cars, hardly any of them capture your attention.” I wanted to protest, but I had to admit that the first-rate designs are those of foreign products and the so-called good domestic designs are mostly copies of western design ideas. Under such circumstances, how to be truly creative becomes a question that has long obsessed me.

As far as I am concerned, the only way out of this dilemma confronting Chinese designers is to “think globally and act locally.” Against the backdrop of globalization, it is not that Chinese designers are not creative; the only problem is that they have failed to channel their creative impulses into international styles. To think globally is to develop international perspectives that may enable them to become leaders in a rapidly changing global culture. To act locally is to transmute their private and national experiences into tangible design expressions. The integration of the international thinking and local action will lead to design works at once aesthetically appealing and thematically eloquent. The individual experiences of Chinese designers are significant only to the extent that they are fused with international sensibilities.

Toward such an objective, it is necessary for me to go to the cultural melting pot that is the XX to experience how cultural pluralism has contributed to creative design and how the faculty and students of different cultural backgrounds communicate and interact with one another. I would like to explore the role that desiring, designing and producing play in the birth of a creative work. I would like to seek solution to two important questions—“How is it possible for me, as a native Chinese, to imbue the Chinese cultural elements and styles with new, modern, and global ones?” and “What’s the new role of designers with regard to the changing economic conditions of today and tomorrow?” I really want to become a designer who is an articulate original thinker, demonstrates leadership skills and seeks to use design as a vehicle for discovery and self-expression.

However, being a mere designer solely devoted to the solution of technical issues is not my total intention. I am equally interested in the idea of “total design program” in which the designer is not solely responsible for originating creative concepts but also for assuming the role of a manager who links up the otherwise discrete steps in the creation of a finished design product. The birth of a satisfying product is not simply determined by the pure design factors. It also depends on inter-departmental coordination, on technical support from engineering sciences and on marketing strategies. Otherwise, even the most original ideas would die in their infancy. In other words, a total design program is a perfect marriage of design objectives and business objectives. The designer is required to play a growing role in the management of a design program. Therefore, the idea of “design for design’s sake” is not sufficient. Designers need to be informed of the market feedbacks in order to deliver a total solution that addresses the clients’ needs on all fronts, including business details. In a word, the designer must have a clear awareness of the business context in which the design must thrive.

In this connection, I would like to seek answer to the question “How can I improve my skills to interact with other players in a particular design project and even serve as an agent for both the buyer/user and the seller/manufacturer?” I have attempted to hunt for an answer to this question by doing an internship this summer at a local company that designs advertisements for industrial products. It is so encouraging to find that the M.F.A. program offered by the School of Art & Design of the University of XX addresses this issue by treating the often overlooked “distribution” as a major component of a comprehensive, articulated process of creation. In order to ensure that creative work ultimately engages an audience in some context, your program teaches students to explore intentional distribution options, as well as issues of economic feasibility, information communication technology and social networking.

Through your program, I will be taught how to expand the intellectual reach of creative work and to utilize a comprehensive process for bringing creative work into the world. Apart from coursework, your program encourages students’ free exploration of creativity by involving them in summer collaborative projects, culminating activities including public exhibitions, creations in individual private studios, and group presentations of creative works. I believe that my prospective education in your graduate school will be an unparalleled opportunity for me to broaden my perspectives, improve my comprehensive skills, and prepare for an exciting career. But the most important outcome I expect from my embarking on your program is that, by capitalizing on my cross-cultural experiences, I will be well equipped to chart new directions in tomorrow’s creative work.

  Personal Statement

  Applied Program: Industrial Engineering (IE)

“God would laugh when human beings think,” a popular saying goes like this. I don’t know how much truth there is in this saying, but if human beings stop thinking, they will be no long called human beings, will they?

I recall this popular saying when I’m writing the present statement because it is my incessant thinking that has been inspiring my thirst for and persevering pursuit of knowledge. It is through this pursuit that I have been tempering myself and adding value to my life. I’m fully aware that if I want to add more value to my life, I should never be content with what I have learned in my undergraduate education and the achievements I have made in my work in well-known multinational enterprises. Instead, I should strive to scale new heights. Now it is the right time I apply for a Ph.D. program in industrial engineering, my specialized field of interest.

I consider my work experience at XX – a well-known international IT company - as an asset for myself. The company put a lot of trust in me. I was made responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all ERP systems in all its factories in China and was appointed a key member for implementing the manufacturing management system of a refrigerator factory. Besides, I was a key member and advisor for the implementation of the Hub system – a logistics solution - for two DVD/CD-ROM factories. I was honored an Excellent Employee in only half a year after joining the company. Moreover, I won appreciations from my superiors and colleagues with my sound communication skills, learning ability and work performance.

In fact, I have dealt with many aspects of industrial engineering in my work before joining XX. I had been working on designing and development of an ERP system in XX Technologies Co., Ltd. - a dynamic company in the tobacco industry - from July 2000 to August 2002. I was specifically responsible for designing and programming the warehouse management and equipment and parts procurement module, analysis of program requirements and design of the CRM prototype system. I spared no efforts in searching for the optimal solution and making on-site investigations to familiarize myself with the operation procedures in all departments covering procurement, warehouse management, customer service and channel management, and getting a large amount of most valuable data and experience.

I know well that my fruitful work performance would not be possible without my successful undergraduate education at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of XX University – a key university in China. In the curriculum for the specialty of Measurement Technology and Instruments, I developed a strong interest in a wide range of courses including Probability Theory & Mathematical Statistics, Fundamentals of Control Theory, Computer Control Technology and Digital Signal Processing. I was obsessed with the things different theories can do. Probability predicts the likelihood that an event will occur. Statistics taught me how to perform analysis. Control theories showed me that the world consists of large and small systems that are interrelated and interact with each other and life is always in a positive/negative feedback at a certain moment. Computers do complicated calculations and make machines work automatically to do the things man can or cannot do. And it was so fulfilling when programs I compiled controlled the computer in completing different tasks. My study of these courses laid a sound foundation for my development of interest in industrial engineering.

Meanwhile, I never confined myself to my own specialty because I knew this would make my perspective narrow and unenlightened. I would read extensively in the library books and journals in hologram informatics, computer science, expert systems as well as novels and journals in English. I was often so engrossed in my reading that I forgot the time.

I was honored an Excellent Student of my department in my third year for distinguished academic and extracurricular development. However, what really distinguished me is my graduation thesis for which I brought into full play my ability to apply knowledge and exercise independent thinking. At the time, I was taking part in my supervisor’s project to design and develop a real-time locomotive operation simulation system for the XX. Therefore, I decided to base my thesis on researches in the project for its practical significance— the simulation system could be used to calculate the most rationalized acceleration and deceleration speed for the locomotive at different times and places. I encountered many challenges in my research. For example, I didn’t know much about the performance of the motors in different models of locomotives. However, I didn’t give up. I consulted a wide range of documents, studied the most commonly used locomotive models and designed the basic computation model. Finally, I successfully completed my thesis and the results computed by the model were highly accurate. I received full recognition and high appraisal from my supervisor for my contribution to the project.

While I have made outstanding achievements in my work, I have also observed the hard facts in China’s machinery industry and other industries in their rapid development. As reported frequently in the media, China is becoming the major manufacturing base of the world. However, we have been mainly relying on cheap labor to make up for our discrepancy in technology, while it is a known fact that the core competitiveness of an enterprise or a country lies in the improvement of efficiency, quality and technology-intensive products. To achieve this goal, we need a variety of tools. Industrial engineering is one of such tools because it improves productivity of the entire society, lowers cost and improves quality. Moreover, as an interdisciplinary subject that encompasses integral system design, implementation and improvement for human resource, materials, equipment, information, energy environment, etc., industrial engineering requires planning, forecast and evaluation of the effectiveness of the above systems with industrial analysis and design theories and methods. Therefore, a practitioner in this field has to have comprehensive knowledge in mathematics, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. And as a discipline bridging engineering and scientific management, it covers a wide range of fields including operations research, human factors, manufacturing engineering, quality control, management engineering and information systems.

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the University of XX is known for its strong faculty and the fusion between research and applications. Therefore, I wish to pursue further studies there. If admitted into your program, I will bring into full play my independent thinking, creative and innovative spirit and self-improvement quality in both my studies and research. The fields I’m specially interested in include investigation of analytical and computational methods for optimization or stochastic, including risk analysis, and the development of methodologies for the design, planning and control of systems in a variety of application domains, including manufacturing, distribution, material handling, transportation, power generation, health care, financial services, information services, and governmental services.

Through studying at your university, I will pursue my professional development in six I’s: Integration: integration of engineering technology and management technology; Information: applications of information systems; Intelligence: expanding my high level intelligence; Interaction: collaboration, personal communication and team spirit; Idea: development of ideas and creativity; International: broad international perspectives.

My personal motto is “Self-discipline and Social Commitment”. I have been setting one challenging target after another in the past to boost my thinking and enterprising spirit with lasting enthusiasm. I believe that I will become a top-notch scholar in industrial engineering through studying at your university. After I return to China on completing my program at your university, I will train more engineers in industrial engineering back in China. I will dedicate all my life to the prosperity and well-being of this society.
